Experience & Excellence
Dr. Thurlow is a board-certified surgeon and a specialist in Gastroenterology. He has a background in nutrition research and molecular biology as well as in general and thoracic surgery. And he has a keen interest in the advances that technology has made in surgery and patient care.
“The technology involved in surgery is always changing and I love to change with it,” he explains. “Part of being a good general surgeon is taking on new techniques and incorporating them with the best current techniques, so that the patient benefits from the best mix of the two.”
General Surgery, Specialized Care
Dr. Thurlow is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Wisconsin where he majored in molecular biology on a music scholarship. He then graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency training in general and thoracic surgery, along with a two-year research fellowship in surgical nutrition, at Duke University Medical Center. He and his wife live in Shorewood and have three grown sons. Dr. Thurlow joined Associated Physicians in 1989.
As a surgeon, Dr. Thurlow performs a variety of procedures at Associated Physicians and at Meriter Hospital. His clinical interests and surgical specialties include the surgical treatment of breast and abdominal cancer, general surgery, endoscopy and laparoscopy.
Personalized & Comprehensive Care
Dr. Thurlow has a unique perspective on the doctor-patient relationships developed at Associated Physicians, because he was a patient here before he joined the practice. He’s gratified to know that the patients of today benefit from the same commitment to personalized care that has always been the standard at Associated Physicians.
“I grew up with Associated Physicians, and my pediatrician was my doctor all the way through high school,” he says. “After my training, it seemed like a good fit to come back here. The nurse who gave me my shots when I was a child was still here, and that says a lot about this group. We have doctors and nurses who love working together, and we are set up so that we can do what’s right for the patient.”
